WeeklyOctober 29, 2022Happy Halloween! 🎃 Let's hope the midterm election results in the United States next week don't give us all a fright. If you're eligible to vote, please exercise your right to do so. This week, we published two moving pieces about the rise of antisemitism in the United States after a high-profile celebrity, Ye, or Kanye West, made some terrible statements and refused to back down. Artist Deborah Kass talks about the perpetual fears many Americans of Jewish descent and/or faith continue to have. "We thought it wouldn’t happen here. Yet we knew it could," she writes. Meanwhile, Isabella Segalovich points out that hate is often a routine expression of the everyday reality of white supremacy and we need to treat it that way. "To be honest, awful as Kanye’s words are, what hurts more is the reaction: So many people acting shocked, as if this level of racist hatred (including but not limited to antisemitism) hadn’t become commonplace, and as if lots of us hadn’t already been sounding alarm bells for years," she writes. As some climate protesters continue to create media spectacles around prominent artworks, one action in the Netherlands, involving Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring," precipitated heckles from art visitors in the gallery, while Lil Nas X decided to "avenge" van Gogh in a viral stunt. What a world. Oh, and it wouldn't be Halloween if I didn't show you something scary from earlier this week.
