"Eliminating the pens simplified the space and created a more inviting path for the viewer's eye to travel into the scene. I then used shadows and the angles of the barn to form a visually interesting zigzag pattern that would move the eye further around the painting."

"We live around a number of dairy farms that over the years I have loved to paint, particularly the cows. Seeing this gathering around the trough I couldn't resist. I set up knowing it would be a fleeting scene but worked quickly and spontaneously, going for the paint without drawing anything out.
