Simplifying a Complicated Rural Scene

By Kelly Kane

"I knew this lovely old barn would make a great subject, but a maze of cattle pens cluttered up the foreground," says Dan Marshall. "Eliminating the pens simplified the space and created a more inviting path for the viewer's eye to travel into the scene. I then used shadows and the angles of the barn to form a visually interesting zigzag pattern that would move the eye further around the painting."

Back on the Farm

From free-range chickens and fruit-laden orchards to pickup trucks and split-rail fences, scenes of rural life offer much to inspire watermedia painters. Wind your way down the country roads and bucolic byways traversed by the six watermedia artists whose work is featured below and find yourself back on the farm.

Capturing a Fleeting Moment

"At The Trough" (gouache, 9 x1 4 in.) by Jim McVicker

"I was driving home after picking up dog food when I spotted this scene," says Jim McVicker. "We live around a number of dairy farms that over the years I have loved to paint, particularly the cows. Seeing this gathering around the trough I couldn't resist. I set up knowing it would be a fleeting scene but worked quickly and spontaneously, going for the paint without drawing anything out. I looked at the mass of cows as one shape while the few lying down and off to the side seemed to make the mass work."

"At The Trough" was awarded Best Plein Air Watercolor & Gouache in the August 2022 PleinAir Salon competition.
