November 11, 2022Good morning. 🌧️ Today, leaders of some of the world's top museums signed a statement decrying climate activism involving food, glue, and famous artworks, adding that they're "deeply shaken" by these actions. I understand where they're coming from: Imagine being in charge of the safety of priceless masterpieces, not knowing when the next attack will come. But there's a problem with this statement, beyond the embarrassing fragility of these museum directors. The problem is that it perpetuates the bankrupt notion that museums are apolitical spaces where social critique can only take place if it's carefully curated and packaged by the institution itself. It's time for these museum directors to step up to their roles as cultural leaders, not just caretakers of cultural property. If they don't, they'll always be part of the problem. In other news, New York City’s salary transparency law went into effect, revealing how little museums pay their workers. We took a deep dive into NYC’s art job postings to bring you the numbers. And as always, there's a lot more. — Hakim Bishara, Senior Editor NYC Salary Transparency Law Exposes Art World’s Lowest WagesMuseums, galleries, and other employers are now obliged to disclose salaries — but that doesn’t mean they’re high. | Elaine Velie LATEST NEWS Last night's protest outside of LACMA (photo courtesy Mohammad Motlagh)
