View this email in your browser Document of Failure Experimental producer Ben Frost's new album, Broken Spectre (which also serves as the soundtrack to Richard Mosse's installation at London's 180 Studios) is intended as a document of the simultaneous power and vulnerability of the Amazon rainforest ecosystem. Frost has manipulated field recordings to bring us the sounds of fauna and flora, usually beyond the range of human hearing. And yet the result, Luke Turner writes, is curiously bland and overblown, 'like some old painting of mountains or forests that sought to reach the sublime in nature, now mass reproduced as a souvenir tea towel'. Such failures demand that we reconsider the values an artist must bring to their engagement with the landscape, that do not merely cling to the belief that the landscape exists to give the human something back.
