Just over 7.98 billion people are estimated to be alive on earth in 2022. People! Each carrying with them visions of what could be, what can be. These visions, ideas, or desires are breathtakingly endless, complex, brilliant, and even mesmerising. They glisten within the human mind eager to be cooked, plated and shared among the populous for the simple pleasure of existence. What, then, stifles our individual galaxies and turns something so awesome to something dull and quotidian? What hinders our sight of self and cripples our potential? Mashudu Nevhutalu, Bored at home, 2022 Many people determine what to be and do in response to the perceptions of others, the markets, what's cool or isn't. But the best things; the ones that over time are remembered and recounted as legend – they come from those who honour what's inside – the authentic self. Imagine, then, what 7.98 billion creators could do if many of their best inner visions were released into the world at the same time. Could we show the stars that we're shining too? Mercy Thokozane Minah, Here's my number, I get off at 10, 2022 For this exhibition, BKhz sought out 15 artists of various mediums and practices to claim their space with works they've itched to show and have seen. Each voice carrying a unique narrative that potentially disagrees with the next but all reverberate in a manner which demonstrates the harmony in existing at the same time. Multidisciplinary: Konopi's practice makes for multiple access points. Recently introducing the public to painting as a part of his arsenal, Konopi's golden night time scenes play out under Apollo lights. Set in residential spaces at a time with no daylight, the paintings further contribute towards Konopi's desire to bring hidden things to the surface for the sake of access, transparency and vulnerability. The personification of a contemporary Black experience in Johannesburg, Konopi's practice and its multiplicity is directed by necessity. An artist in motion, migrating daily from Johannesburg's South, into its Central, to get to the city's North, Konopi's work moves with him, adopting the city's lexicon, codes, colours, inhibitions, freedoms and pessimisms.
