His recent pivot to film criticism with his new book Cinema Speculation, then, is unsurprising, a logical next step for a vocal cinephile looking for further avenues to enthusiastically demonstrate his expertise. Equally unsurprising, for Caitlin Quinlan, is the honeyed and conservative picture he paints of a white, male, American cinema. And so where many critics and outlets have attempted to, for example, reappraise the work of women directors (as evidenced most recently by the Sight & Sound critics' poll), Tarantino's obsessive view 'unwittingly leans into a tiresome trend within contemporary criticism', privileging sentiment over thorough analysis, hyperbole over considered thinking. It is 'not that fans, and even working critics, shouldn't be allowed to enjoy things', Quinlan writes.
