Over the past 3 years, exponential growth has seen the reach and maturity of the ART AFRICA audience totalling over 400 000 readers and subscribers. | | PARTNERSHIP EVENTS ART AFRICA ATTENDED | | MARCH MEETING 2022 Sharjah, UAE Themed' The Afterlives of the Postcolonial', the event convened artists, curators and art practitioners to interrogate critical issues in contemporary art through discussion panels, lectures and art performances in the lead-up to the Sharjah Biennale 15. Hosted by the Sharjah Art Foundation, this took place from 5 to 7 March 2022. | | | Global Ghana Sharjah, UAE GLOBAL GHANA: SITES OF DEPARTURE / SITES OF RETURN presented in Sharjah, UAE and Accra, Ghana, in 2022 and convened by leading scholars Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Jean Allman, Carina Ray, and Joseph Oduro-Frimpong. The Sharjah chapter took place from 8 to 10 March 2022. | | | Art Dubai Dubai, UAE Art Dubai is the Middle East's leading international art fair every March. ART AFRICA produced three videos while there of Shumon Basaar, Cyrus Kabiru and Art Dubai. The fair took place from 11 to 13 March 2022. | | | ARCOlisboa Lisbon, Portugal ARCOlisboa 2022 closed the doors of its 5th edition on a positive note. The healthy sales rate reported by the galleries confirmed the commitment of Portuguese and international collectors to contemporary art. The fair took place from 19 to 22 May 2022. | | | Venice Biennale Venice, Italy Titled 'The Milk of Dreams', The 59th International Art Exhibition ran from 23 April to 27 November 2022, curated by Cecilia Alemani. As the first Italian woman to hold this position, she said of the exhibition, "The Milk of Dreams aspires to be an optimistic Exhibition, which celebrates art and its capacity to create alternative cosmologies and new conditions of existence." ART AFRICA produced numerous video productions of the African Pavilions and diaspora artists featured. | | | Sharjah Film Platform 5 Sharjah, UAE Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) is an annual festival of independent cinema, documentary filmmaking and moving image, where audiences can discover new approaches to film and art. The ten-day event took place from 21-30 October 2022 | | | Istanbul Biennale Istanbul, Turkey "This biennial was conceived in the midst of a spiralling global health crisis... We felt a need to focus on process rather than on production. Yet all we could do was talk, and the only way to talk was from a distance." From the curatorial statement. The Biennale took place from 17 September to 20 November 2022. | | | Contemporary Istanbul Istanbul, Turkey Contemporary Istanbul is the leading art fair in the region and a significant platform connecting artists, galleries, and collectors from around the world. Through new initiatives and multiple collaborations with Turkish and international partners, Contemporary Istanbul aims to shape the future of art in the region. The fair took place from 17 to 22 September 2022 | | | Lubumbashi Biennale Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo The 7th edition of the Biennale entitled 'Toxicity' is composed of two concepts, that of the toxic and that of the city. Reflecting on the link between contemporary life in the postcolonial urban setting of Lubumbashi and the urban Global South, and the impact of a number of industrial, economic, ecological, social and cultural processes that have historically contributed to the shape and dynamics of urban life today. Under the artistic direction of Picha, the five associate curators are Paula Nascimento, Lucrezia Cipitelli, Bruno Leitão, René Francisco RodrÃguez and Mpho Matsipa – and a curatorial advisor – Ugochukwu- Smooth C. Nzewi. The Biennale ran from 6 October to 6 November 2022. | | | Casablanca Biennale Casablanca, Morocco 'The Words create Images' The fifth Biennale Internationale de Casablanca is developed by Christine Eyene and assisted by Selma Naguib, Patrick Nzazi Kiama, and Juste Constant Onana Amougui, respond to the intention to develop each edition in an organic progression in symbiosis with the local social and cultural fabric. The first chapter took place from the 17th of November to the 17th of December with the second chapter opening on the 1 June to 23 July 2023. | | | OZANGÉ | 1st Biennial of African Photography Malaga, Spain Following in the footsteps of the great African photography festivals, the Biennale is not only an exhibition space, with the presentation of a selection of works by current photographers from the continent or the diaspora. With a particular emphasis on the work of women artists, Ozangé is also conceived as a space for exchanges, encounters, and opportunities for the new generation. Curated by Owanto, OZANGÉ pays tribute to LagosPhoto Festival. The Biennale opened on 3 November 2022 and runs until 29 January 2023. | | | Rencontres de Bamako Bamako, Mali Titled 'Maa ka Maaya ka ca a yere kono—On Multiplicity, Difference, Becoming and Heritage', this edition is an invitation to reflect collectively on these multiplicities of being and differences, to go beyond the notion to be unique and to embrace composite, layered and fragmented identities, as well as multiple, complex and non-linear understandings of space and time. Collaboratively conceived by the curatorial team – Akinbode Akinbiyi, Meriem Berrada, Tandazani Dhlakama, and Liz Ikiriko together with Artistic Director Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung – this edition of the Biennale will once again facilitate a moment of encounter for artists from the African world. Nzewi, George Senga, Sharlene Khan, Premesh Lalu, Owanto Berger, Azu Nwagbogu, Andile Dyalvane and Zizipho Poswa, to name but a few. The limited edition print publication will be distributed internationally to 200 of the most relevant international art professionals, including curators, directors of biennales and museums, academic institutions, associated libraries, and collectors.
